A Monte Cristo sandwich has custardy thick-cut bread, smoky and salty ham and turkey, melty Swiss cheese, and sweet raspberry jam.
It is cooked on a flat-top grill, and it has cheese, so is it a grilled cheese? Who knows. But what we do know is it is delicious.
If you’re ever at Disneyland, head to Orleans Cafe (next to Pirates of the Caribbean) and try theirs.
Instructions:
Heat a flat-top grill over medium heat.
First make the custard. Whisk together the eggs, milk and salt & pepper in a medium sized bowl until well combined. Or as Mark says “beat the snot out of it”. Set aside.
To prepare the sandwich, spread raspberry jam on one side of each slice of bread. Layer the ham on top of the jam on the first slice of bread. Place the turkey on top of the jam on the second slice of bread. Place one slice of Swiss cheese on top of the ham and one on top of the turkey (if you want your cheese to be more melty, make it the first layer on the bread). Press the sandwich together gently to make it compact.
Carefully dip the entire sandwich into the custard mixture, ensuring both sides are evenly coated. Let any excess batter drip off. Carefully place the sandwich on the flat top. Cook with a cloche (covered) for 3-4 minutes on each side or until the sandwich is golden brown and crispy and the cheese has melted.
Remove the sandwich from the skillet and place it on a cutting board. Slice it into halves or quarters and dust lightly or liberally with powdered sugar. Enjoy with your pinkies up.
