Spam Musubi

with Japanese BBQ Sauce

Prep Time 5 Minutes

Cook Time 20 Minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 oz Spam
  • ½ Cup Bachan’s BBQ Sauce
  • Nori roasted seaweed (cut into halves or thirds)
  • 2 cups cooked short-grain white rice

Spam Musubi is the ultimate hand-held portable snack. The Spam is rich and salty, the Japanese BBQ sauce is sweet and tangy, the nori is pure umami, and the rice gives you that comforting carb love. Don’t let the shelf stable aspect of the meat scare you away.

Instructions:

Heat a flat-top grill over medium heat. Cut the spam into eight slices and place them on the pre-heated flat top. Brush each slice with Bachan’s BBQ sauce, flip, and repeat by brushing the Bachan’s BBQ sauce on the opposite side. Once the Spam is nicely browned and cooked to your desired crispiness, remove them from the grill and set aside.

Line the Spam can with plastic wrap, enough so that some plastic overhang is available for you to grip and lift the ingredients out. Add cooked rice to the can, pressing down evenly and firmly. You will want about one to one and a half inches of rice. Pro Tip: Dip your fingers in water as you go to prevent sticking.

Next, place a piece of the cooked Spam on top of the rice. Again, press firmly so that the Spam sticks to the rice. Now, you can remove the ingredients from the can using the plastic wrap as an airlift. Wrap the delectable little block of rice and spam with nori, ensuring both ends meet at the rice. Use a tiny amount of water on your finger to seal the nori if needed. Repeat this process with the remaining ingredients. Serve warm.
